Steve: Greetings. I just read an article in "The Shellback" (Master Mariner's News Letter) about the recent Bear Boat meeting at TIYC. I am a Knarr owner and Vice Admiral of the Knarr Association. I'm sure you would recognize me as I know who you are. I am the developer of the Wednesday Evening Series. For years this series was hosted by GGYC, and then about 3 years ago we moved it down to STFYC. Attendance has been spectacular since the move, and the IOD's, Knarrs and Folkboats enjoy 12 Wed. evening races in the months of May, June and August. The first start is at 6:40 p.m., and the fleets start in five minute intervals. I would love so much if the Bear boats would join us . again. I say "again", because as a young boy I recall Bears racing in the Wednesday Evening Series. The IOD's get their own start, and sometimes they have as few as 2-3 boats. I say this only so that you won't feel intimidated by the usual STFYC critical mass protocol for a one-design start. The caliber of sailors in the fleets is also varied. I say this, again, only so that if you are sharing this with others in your fleet, I want you to know that this is a social regatta, and you don't have to be a rock star to participate. I know most of the Bear fleet lives in Sausalito, and some might consider it a lot of work to go back and forth 12 Wednesdays. It would be possible, I suppose, to fashion a shorter series for the Bears (i.e. six or eight Wednesdays). After sailing everyone goes into the STFYC for a sailor's buffet dinner, which is reasonably priced and plentiful. Nightly trophies are awarded for first through third. On one of the Wednesdays, we have a ladies' skipper night. The STFYC offers free overnight berthing the day before and the day of each race, depending upon availability. This means that 99% of the time there's room. All you have to do is clear it with the dockmaster in advance or the day of. Anyway, I would be so psyched if the Bears would come back next year. If you would like to come to STFYC as my personal guest on Wed, 8/31, to observe the racing and social activities, I would be honored. I am copying Bill Madison, the President of the Folkboat Class, on this email as the series still belongs to Folkboaters, as well as Jim Kiriakis, the current STFYC Executive Race Committee chairman. Warmest regards, |
| Hello out there to all you Bear
Boat lovers:
My old college buddy and I are proud owners of a 1940 Big Bear named "Goza" which we purchased July of 2004. We currently have it berthed @ Napa Valley Marina and have been slowly begun nursing it back to health after several years of neglect and hard sailing by the previous owners. Goza seems to have gone through several make shift modifications and repairs over the years .We would like to restore it somewhat close to it's previous glory. However we are at a loss to find any other examples of a Big Bear in the area for comparative purposes and ideas .Our understanding is that there were seven of these that were built by the Nunes . We were also told that one of these has ended up in Vancouver , B.C.. If any of you have any information or contacts regarding other Big Bears we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks I can be reached by |
| BEAR ASSOCIATION TO RE-INVENT ITSELF
Treasure Island Yacht Club. The meeting convenes at 2:00 PM. Food and refreshments are being arranged. A variety of circumstances have prompted the necessity of re-inventing the Bear Boat Owners Association and sustaining the Bear Boat Trust. These circumstances are well outlined in an article prepared for publication in the February 2005 issue of LATITUDE 38 by bay area writer and former owner of HUCK FINN, Margie Siegal. (Margie is seeking a partner to help her take on the ownership of HUCK FINN once again. Please see the details in the article "HUCK FINN, # 14, NEEDS NEW PATRONS" below) Bear Boat Trust originator, Bill Jelliffe, Bear Boat website originator, Steve Barber, and Margie have called a meeting for May 22. Please mark your calendar!! The location is yet to be announced as negotiations are underway with a number of bay area yacht clubs. Please continue to revisit this site to learn of the meeting details |
| HUCK FINN, #14, NEEDS NEW PATRONS
Until a few years ago Bear boat HUCK FINN was lovingly cared for by Margie Siegal, a bay area writer and analyst for a law firm. Her writing is of the journalistic bent covering the classic motorcycle scene in Northern California for a number of national and international motorcycle publications. Recently, she learned that the person to whom she had sold HUCK FINN was no longer going to continue ownership. Margie is not a Boatwright, but is quite handy with sandpaper and a varnish brush when time permits. She is looking for someone to partner up with in taking on the continued care of HUCK FINN. Please contact Margie by email |
| Dear Bear Owners and Friends:
On July 19, 2000, Robert Wayne passed away after a tough battle against multiple ailments. He passed in his sleep, and is now, no doubt enjoying flying and sailing with his buddies. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou, his sons, Rob, Jr., Tony and Jeff, and his daughter Vicki. He enjoyed 5 grandchildren -- all destined to become sailors like their grandfather.< Bob Wayne owned Williwaw for many years and was an active member and supporter of the Bear Boat Association. His ashes were buried at sea in an 8 Bell Ceremony July 24th. Scotty Cauchois kindly brought out Trigger, # 20, as part of the boat processional to the burial site (Williwaw was unavailable due to the current restoration). Bob's family was very pleased that a Bear was part of the tribute to him. Bob happily supplied parts and advice to me over the past 2 years as I have enjoyed learning her strengths and "quirks." He was pleased that I plan to keep Williwaw a proud and active member of the Bay's fleet. We have lost a great traditional sailor and friend. Condolences may be sent to Mrs. Wayne at their home in Tiburon. Address: Jay Kehoe |
| Racing Schedule for the 2000 Season
We're in the process of finalizing a 16 race schedule for this coming YRA season. Racing will be under the rules of the USYRU, and will be sponsored by various yacht clubs at three different racing courses on the Bay. If you as a skipper or as crew would like to contribute to the finalizing of the schedule, and adding other sailing events for the Class to the coming season's roster please submit. Thanks, and "Bear Boats Forever" |
