Bear Boat #37 - Root Bear
1947, Essentially Free, except for fees to acquire from Napa Valley Marina
Owner is Kirby Long (Harbor Master) at Napa Valley Marina, 707-252-8012.
Earlier owner Herschel is out of $ and had to give up the boat to the marina. Earlier owner Bruce Martens is feeling effect of recession and can't afford to fix Root Bear. However, he has good woodworking skills and is willing to help work on Root Bear in order to get a Bear sailing again. He feels very bad about the state Root Bear is in.

Root Bear is in rough shape and basically stripped inside. Her stem is rotted and needs replacement. Several planks at the stem have been cut back to prepare for scarfing. All of her frames have been sistered. Her deck and house are in good shape. She only has a mainsail currently.

Bear Boat #52 - Juno
1949, $5,000 or best offer to secure a good home for Juno, my mistress of thirty years, 90% restored, but now needs regular maintenance, restoration included new keel bolts, sistered most of the ribs, refastened all hull, all new deck structure, all new cabin structure/top, new deck glassed canvas and sanded, new boom, good mast, original hardware, varnish in good condition, in need of paint, decent sails 1 main 2 jibs, 1 old and 1 new spinnaker, terrific upwind Sausalito Yacht Harbor berth 180 per month with electricity.  This is a rebuilt boat that needs basic maintenance and would be a great boat for someone who wants to care for the boat, but not get in to the huge projects , which are completed.  More than anything else I want to find a good home for this boat. Some miscellaneous gear and supplies, also inc.  Be a part of Bear history,  its your turn !

Bear Boat #34 - Silver
1946, $750
Owner is Andrew McClelland in Moss Landing.
Silver Bear is #34 of the historic Bear Boats. www.bearboats.com. Built in 1946 in Sausalito, specifically to handle the winds of the SF Bay, she is incredibly stable and a breeze to sail on the Bay - even solo.
She has a rich history including winning the SF Bay 1969 Commodore Cup

She's comes fully equipped with 3 sails, rigging, cover and outboard motor. As you can see from the photos, she needs some exterior maintenance but is structurally sound and ready to sail. She'd docked at Moss Landing Harbor -B Dock and you can see her from the parking lot or give me a call to see in person. I hate to part with her but I just don't have the time to care for her. If you want a great weekend project and the opportunity to sail the bay at your leisure for a minimal investment, Silver Bear is for you. The slip is transferable and costs about $175/month.

Bear #69, VELAROSA $4,000 - SOLD circa 2005

The youngest (1978) Bear Boat is in perfect shape, other than a tear in the beautiful heavy canvas, full length cover. Barient winches, more... We would keep her but are already up to our eyeballs in wooden (historic sailing whale-) boats. Surveyed by Peter Minkwitz in 1988 and valued at $5,000 with an outboard engine. Could we interest someone in taking her for $4,000? If not, make us an offer.

Bear #14, WILLIWAW $12,000 - SOLD 2009

Goes to first caller:

I have not sailed Williwaw in too long: other hobby taking more time these days. I might be interested in selling her to the right buyer. She is the finest Bear afloat. Berthed behind private home Paradise Bay.

Over $30,000 invested last 3 years in refit and inboard. Sails still in great shape. Everything on boat is highest grade. Finest Bear in existence. Slower than Smokey cuz of inboard. But- makes cruising push button easy.

Contact me for details and discussion.

Bear #45 Orsa Bella

She's had some recent work done by Richardson Bay Boat Works - and has much work yet to be done. There's a vinatage main, jib and spin. No motor. Electric bildge pump and cabin light. Weathered cover. There is the possibility of a good Clipper Yacht Harbor Sausalito Berth.

$1695.00

R.I.P.  Bear #3
I am the current owner of Bear Boat # 3, "Teddy Bear", berthed at Mission Creek Harbour in San Francisco. I took her on a few months ago, but I have unfortunately come to realize she needs more serious work than I can give her, and another good home. I am able to do the work, but have way too much on my plate to do it in the immediate future. Last week I raised her up from the bottom after the pump failed, and have now reduced leakage to a minimal (I hope) weeping. I had to remove all of the interior (berths, cubbies, and ceilings) to do enough field patching of the hull side seam of the garboard strakes (both sides) to keep her afloat. In this process it became clear that at least every frame forward of the cockpit (many sistered) is completely broken in at least one place and needs replacing. The keel bolts probably need replacing. Much of the planking seems sound enough except the garboards and first planks, and the sheer strakes are a little punky. The deck and deckhouse are fair. The tiller is make-shift, but she seems to have virtually all the original bronze fittings. The boom has a bronze roller reef mechanism. I dont know if that is original or not, and likewise the stainless steel horse across the fordeck. Anyway, there you have it. She needs work soon, and I just don't have the time. If I can't find a good home for her, I'll be forced to strip her of her fittings and chop her up. As a lover of old boats, I think that wood be a shame. Pun intended. I only gave $400 for her and certainly don't expect any more. Help, please! Save Teddy Bear!

No one stepped forward in time to save TEDDY BEAR. She was dismantled on the sand at her last mooring a few weeks after this ad appeared in 2002.
