Builder revisits his creation

Pola's Trophies

This photo, taken in 1950, shows bear boat #12, KOALA, owned by Larry Kohler at the time (member of Corinthian Yacht Club) being edged for third place bye Gordon Hellwig, also of the Corinthian, in his Bear, WILLIWAW hull #14.

The Bear Boat fleet under sail. The date, occasion and location of this photo are unknown. Courtesy of J. Vincent.

This is an undated (but it was taken sometime between 1939 and 1954) photo of J. Vincent in teh rigging of his boat POLA. Note that the entire mast is painted. We are told by Mr. Vincent that the paint was obtained the same way he obtained materials to build the "shack" in which he built POLA between 1937 and 1939... he scrounged it. The color is SantaFe yellow.

38 Bears registered for this race in 1947, the 14th Annual William Randolph Hearst All Clubs Regatta.

This was not ledgable after scanning.

A photo from 1957 of Tom Boy, Bear #4 in the channel of Moss Landing Harbor.  Ralph and Chrystal Kent are in the cockpit.  The boat was moored at Elkhorn Yacht Club, sailed primarily in Monterey Bay, and also made the trip several times to SF Bay and the Delta area.  Raced in the Windjammer from SF to Moss Landing.
